| Emmamba (Kakoboza) |

Note: Although there are
two groups of mmamba clans, the species that represents
them as a totem is one; the Protopterous aethiopicus.
The difference lies in the habitat; when it dwells
in muddy conditions with less food, it changes
diet grows thin yet if it is deep waters with
richer diet, it is bigger and longer in size.

There are two mmamba clans in Buganda; the one that
predates Kintu in Buganda and the one that came with
him. The one of Buwaya which came with Kintu is headed
by Gabunga while this very one is headed by Nnankere.
The grandfather of this clan is believed to be the
32nd Kabaka in the Tonda dynasty called Kimalempaka
Bukulu and he could have reigned about 1100-1120 AD.
When a prince was being installed as king, the duty
of this clan in the palace was to confirm him as king.
The ritual required the prince to go to Nnankere’s
house with his mother (Namasole) through the main
entrance to meet Nnankere who accessed it through
the minor door and they would meet inside. All the
rituals were performed at that particular moment and
Nnankere would walk out of the Namiryango house to
make the official announcement of a new king.
“Kaakano ofuuse Kabaka; Genda olamule Obuganda.‘translating
t’Now you have become king; go and rule the
kingdom of Buganda.‘
