Muyige the man believed to be the founder
of the Kibe clan had a lot of free-range chicken in
his courtyard in Bukunja, Kyaggwe. A fox that lived
in the nearby forests kept harassing his fowls. He
tried as much as he could to kill it but in vain.
After eating all his chicken, he officially declared
his hatred for the animal and said that none of his
children shall associate with this animal. That is
why the jackal (Kibe) came to be this clan’s
totem.
The origins of this man are not quite clear. Some
writers say that he came from Bukunja, Kyaggwe and
moved on to Busujju. Other writers say that he came
from Nyende Island of Lake Victoria in Nyanza and
arrived in Buganda during the reign of King Kimera.
Others say that he was in Buganda before Kintu came
and his seat was in Busujju until he moved to Kyaggwe
when Ssekabaka Jjuuko sent Prince Kayemba to go and
conquer Buvuma Island. He went with so many Kibe clansmen
on this mission. After the conquest, some of them
remained on the Buvuma Island while others went to
Busoga. So many others returned with the prince in
Buganda and settled in Makindu, Buyikwe, Buzaama and
Bugolo.
They were the chief brewers of the Kabaka, and this
duty was assigned to them by Kabaka Ssemakookiro.
When Prince Ssemakokiro was going to attack his brother
Kabaka Jjunju for the *crime he committed againt his
wife a man named Kyasanku was sent by the prince to
bring him his wine and earlier, Kyasanku had discovered
the use of a straw. He brought his wine in a calabash
with a straw and the prince wondered what the stick
was all about.Kyasanku explained to him how convenient
it was to drink with a straw. The prince tried and
it worked. The next time the prince wanted his wine,
he asked Kyasanku to bring it with its stick in it
and that is how he acquired the name Sseruti (translating
into a stick) and that is how he became the chief
brewer in the royal palace.
*Kabaka Jjunju wanted to consort with Ssemakokiro’s
wife and when she declined him, he ordered that they
disembowel her to see whether her pregnancy was of
a boy or a girl. That was the cause of the war between
Prince Ssemakokiro and Kabaka Jjunju.
