Kkooki which boarders with Isingiro and Rakai today
was a name of a place in Bunyoro where Bwowe Isinggoma,
the first ruler of Kkooki came from. His reasons to
leave Bunyoro were out of political rage with his
brother Duhaga I.
Duhaga was the heir to Isansa Gabigogo, King of Bunyoro.
Before he died, he gave part of his kingdom to his
twin sons Bwowe Isinggoma and Kitayimbwa Kato to rule.
Bwowe was given a part close to Buddu and Kitayimbwa
was assigned another place near Cope. But before they
took over power, Isansa died and his heir Duhaga refused
to divide his kingdom.
When Bwowe threatened to leave for Ankole, Duhaga
granted him his father’s wish but denied Kitayimbwa,
something the two brothers could not take. They headed
towards Buddu with an army, fought the natives, took
control of the place and named it Kkooki.
When the dust settled, Bwowe sent his twin brother
Kitayimbwa to his brother Duhaga with special gifts
and spears to express his conquest but this was misconstrued
by Duhaga’s chiefs to mean impending war. Kitayimbwa
was immediately detained and his men sent Bwowe a
message that his brother had been incarcerated. Furious
Bwowe came to Duhaga quickly quarrelling about his
brother’s detention. Duhaga ordered his men
to execute Bwowe but he made a will before he died.
He said his brother Kitayimbwa should take over his
new Kingdom of Kkooki as king; that the bloodline
of Kitayimbwa should hound and hunt down whoever comes
from Duhaga’s lineage; and with all intent and
purposes, Kitayimbwa should go back to Kkooki and
never return to Bunyoro.
Kitayimbwa ascended the throne of Kkooki after his
twin brother’s demise but he never sired children.
When he died, he was succeeded by his nephew Mujwiga,
Bwowe’s eldest son. As fate may have it, Mujwiga
too never sired children. His brother Mugenyi ascended
the throne when Mujwiga died. Mugenyi seems to have
not had children because he was succeeded by his brother,
Ndawula Lwabulanga.
Ndawula was blessed with children and was the first
in the line of Bwowe and Kitayimbwa to be succeeded
by his own son, KitayimbwaII Kayiba. It seems like
the fertility spell that had befallen this family
was broken because Kitayombwa II too had children
and was succeeded by his own son, Isansa Lwampanja.
Isansa was succeeded by his son Lubambula who apparently
did not have children because Ndawula Kamuswaga inherited
his throne was his brother and not his son.
Kkooki under Kezekia Ndawula Kamuswaga became a tributary
kingdom of Buganda in November 1896 during the reign
of Kabaka Mwanga.
